How to choose a dive knife?
A knife for scuba diving is a gear that will come in handy when you are analyzing submerged wreckage, breaking clams, or, if you are accidentally trapped in an ancient fishing trap at the bottom and air is running out. With the immense choice of shapes and sizes of knives in the market, it may be hard to choose which knife is suitable for you. This guide will help you to review significant knife features so you can choose the best one for you.Try to choose a small or medium size knife because a large knife is heavy and dangerous also. The blade and holder should be almost similar in size.
Choose a dive knife that has a double linear and jagged blade for improved versatility. The linear blade will be suitable for cutting the ropes, such as string and nylon traps; the serrated blade is best served for cutting natural threads like yarn and kelp.
Stainless steel knives usually arrive with a sequence number, normally 300 or 400 range. The less the number, the more immune the blade is to rust. A 300 series knife won´t corrode as quickly as a 400 series knife, but the 400 will stay sharper; thus, they each demand their particular lookout.
The blade shape and size depend on the intended use of the knife. A pointed blade is useful for cutting through rope or fishing line, while a serrated blade is ideal for sawing through thick materials. The blade length should be long enough to be useful but not so long that it becomes unwieldy.
The handle material should be comfortable and easy to grip, even when wearing gloves. Common materials for handles include rubber, plastic, and stainless steel.
The sheath should be durable and easy to use. A locking mechanism is important to keep the knife securely in place when not in use. The sheath should also be easily attachable to a BCD or other diving gear. The brands that offer knives for scuba diving are Cressi, SEAC, Salvimar, Mares, and Aqualung.
